Changing the Medical Narrative: Depathologizing Trans and Queer Identities

The goal of this Fireside Chat with Loren Academic Services is to spark discussion between trans activists, healthcare providers, medical educators, and policymakers. The provision of healthcare for transgender individuals – particularly trans people of color – has a storied history of discrimination. Awareness of these issues is not enough; this Fireside seeks to identify ways that individuals and organizations can take action to address the current inequities in healthcare and generate meaningful change.

In the past week, the politicization of healthcare for trans people came to the forefront as the federal government announced that it plans to roll back healthcare protections for LGBTQIA Americans covered under the Affordable Care Act. The reversal of this policy opens avenues for healthcare providers to refuse to treat LGBTQIA patients. However, it is important to recognize that this announcement, and the awareness it has generated, only serve to legalize the discrimination that trans people already experience when seeking healthcare. It’s time to change this narrative.
